Another Audi recall: This time models from the A4 to A8 series and the Q5 and Q7 models
Audi has launched a major recall campaign involving more than 600,000 vehicles worldwide. The aim is to rectify emissions problems, including unauthorised thermal windows and defeat devices. A software update will optimise engine control systems and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
The first recall affects 262,264 A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 cars built between 2010 and 2017. These cars are equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems that do not comply with EU regulations following a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) in July 2022. In Germany in particular, 50,713 vehicles are affected.
The problem lies in the use of 'thermal windows', which restrict exhaust gas cleaning in certain temperature ranges. This has been declared illegal. These functions will be corrected by a mandatory software update to ensure full emissions compliance.
A second recall affects 342,179 A4, A6 and A8 cars built between 2005 and 2010 and involves the removal of illegal defeat devices and the optimisation of the emission control system. In Germany, 128,959 vehicles are affected.
In both cases, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) (Federal Motor Transport Authority) will inform the affected vehicle owners, who will have to take their cars to a garage. In addition to the software updates, further technical modifications to the vehicles may be necessary.
Audi has set up a hotline to answer any questions. These recall measures are an important step towards meeting legal requirements and ensuring the environmental compatibility of the affected vehicles.
Good news for affected car owners:
Legal pathways for compensation have improved significantly. A 2023 German Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) ruling clarified that claims for damages can be made even if the manufacturer acted negligently, not just intentionally. If your Audi is impacted, now might be the time to explore your options for compensation.
